Mentor Bio

J.R. Hart is a thirty-something Kansas City-based author writing queer, neurodivergent, and disabled romance from their own lived experience. They have one kiddo, two dogs, and far more coffee mugs than are necessary. Find Hart’s newest releases, Heart on His Lead and Go Truck Yourself, on Amazon and other major online retailers. A long-time supporter of queer romance from a diverse set of experiences, they co-founded and co-edited the Clover Hill Romance series.

Mentorship Expectations

As a mentor with a varied background in the writing community (self, indie, and hybrid publishing, and an editing background), I’d ideally have a mentee who is able to communicate their preferred path forward so I can help give feedback that’s best suited to their needs and goals. Ideally, I’d also be working with a mentee who is open to written communication (discord/email/etc) more than audio/video communication, as I have an audio processing disorder. I am willing to offer additional feedback rounds beyond the minimum requirement.

Manuscript Wishlist

As a romance author, I much prefer to work with other romance authors, since that’s the genre I’m most familiar with in terms of pacing and conventions. It’s also the genre I’m most comfortable editing from a developmental standpoint if that’s needed.

I would prefer not to work on books in:

  • Horror
  • Sci-fi,
  • Heavy fantasy
  • Would be open to sci-fi with a strong romance component.

As a neurodivergent and chronically ill/disabled person (hEDS, autism, ADHD, chronic pain), and as a queer person (nonbinary, pan, aroaspec), I also love seeing representation similar to my own, but that’s not required for me to feel like it’s a successful mentor/mentee relationship.
