Megan Bontrager is an author of SFF and horror currently based in Yorkshire, where she is in her final year of a practice-as-research PhD in English. She received her MA from Johns Hopkins and BFA from the University of Central Florida. Her short fiction has previously been published with Quill & Crow Publishing House, Cypress Dome Literary Magazine, Frontier Poetry, and 30 North Literary Magazine. Megan’s indie debut, Eye of the Ouroboros, was published in 2024. She recently had the pleasure of announcing her next venture: a three-book contract with Orbit US/UK, for three standalone horror and horrormance novels beginning with THE SEA HIDES ITS DEAD in July 2026.
When she isn’t frantically scribbling down her next big idea, Megan enjoys playing TTRPGs and volunteering with animal rescues. She is responsible for two furry children, and hopes to support their lavish lifestyles with her books.
Megan is represented by Clara Chuiton at The Rights Factory.
I’m willing to be incredibly flexible with what my mentee needs. Typically, I’m more hands-on than the average bear; I’m still heavily involved in working with both my mentee’s from last year’s program, and am fully committed to helping them both for as long as they need me. I will, of course, offer the basic full read and edit letter, but I’ve really enjoyed keeping in regular contact with my current mentees as we work through more extensive edits together. I’m also more than happy to just be a point of contact for publishing queries, advice, and the like.
Adult only, please! I unfortunately don’t have the knowledge for YA. Horror and SFF are where I live most comfortably, and am happy to see anything under those umbrellas. Reads that I’ve enjoyed recently, similar to projects I’d love to work on, are Savage Blooms, Blood Over Bright Haven, The Faceless Thing We Adore, The Knight and the Moth, The Starving Saints, The Faithful Dark, Moonflow, and Slaying the Vampire Conqueror. I love a retelling, particularly of anything Shakespeare or Shakespeare-adjacent. If there’s anything D&D related in or around your books, or if there’s any inspiration there, I absolutely want it!
Conversely, I’m not the best fit for:
- Crime thrillers
- Police procedurals
- Anything where there’s graphic animal abuse
