JR Creaden (they/them) is an award-winning author of speculative fiction for children and adults as well as a freelance editor and writing coach who’s committed to helping creators develop and refine their vision and voice.
Their adult debut Moon Dust In My Hairnet is a cozy, near-future science fiction hailed as “a powerful exploration of survivor’s guilt and trauma” by Publishers Weekly. No matter the genre, age group, or medium, they aim for their works to leave no ups unpunched, no pain unprocessed, no light uncelebrated, and no whimsies unwhimmed.
My ideal mentee is a lifelong creator who’s hungry to grow their craft through the mentorship process in ways that continue beyond a single manuscript. They’re curious, eager to experiment and push themselves, and confident enough in their vision and skills that they appreciate edits as opportunities to advance. I’ll gladly make myself available as an occasional resource for my mentee for querying or submitting.
I’m looking for Earth-based science fiction and speculative fiction for mg, ya, or adult. (What I mean by Earth-based is either settings on Earth or space settings where Earth is the known origin planet.) I’m not a great fit for royal court, born-to-unrivaled-privilege or bloodline-inherited powers kinds of stories. I’d love to see any other kind of speculative or sci-fi mashup!
My favorite books range from heady and provocative works like Neal Shusterman’s Arc of a Scythe and Richard Powers’ Overstory to outrageous and fun adventures like Sal & Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez or The Husbands by Holly Gramazio. There’s not much out of the question for me topic or trope wise, but I tend to be most excited by contemporary or futuristic settings and “weird but sweet” plotlines.
