A.S. Crowder

AS Crowder writes stories about queer people dealing with the larger-than-life–from monsters and magic to the wild worlds of pro wrestling and performance–and the mundane in both the YA and adult spaces. They’ve been a teacher and a critique partner for years in casual and academic contexts and love the art of revision. They are a WriteHive and Author Mentor Match alum currently on submission and are represented by Alex Land at Mad Woman Literary Agency.

I’m looking for a mentee who knows what their story is at its heart and is willing to put in the work to tell that story as honestly as possible. Major rewrites are a possibility; conversations about goals and intentions and the whys of decisions are a guarantee. I’d like to have an initial meeting (format is negotiable–I want you to be comfortable!) so that we can clarify what you want from your project. I’ll give in-line comments and an edit letter, and I’ll help you shape your query package. I’ll be here to see you through revisions and into the query trenches. My hope is for the mentorship to last beyond the submitted manuscript and to be an ally on my mentee’s long-term publishing journey.

Age categories:

  • YA
  • Adult

Genres:

  • Contemporary fantasy
  • Horror (especially Southern Gothic)
  • Soft sci-fi (more about the society than the science)
  • Things that don’t cleanly fit in one genre.

If you’ve got something that’s like Jules Arbeaux’s CAGE OF STARLIGHT, can be comped to anything by Aiden Thomas, or feels like the movie HUSH…HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE, send it my way.

I’m not a good fit for:

  • Sword and sorcery fantasy
  • Military stories
  • Hard sci-fi
  • Sexual assault on page is an automatic no for me (there’s a space for those stories, but I’m not the one for them.)
