Interview: Sponsored Artist Rebekah Webb

Morning Friends!

Today we have with us Rebekah Webb, one of our two Sponsored Artist Award winners for 2021. Rebekah writes horror, and her novel, Burrows of Blood and Shadow is an intriguing tale filled with dark humor. We took a moment to talk with Rebekah about herself and her connection with WriteHive.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your writing.

My first book was an attempt to make an educational anatomy book. I was four, so I dictated it to my older brother. It had gem such as “Nerves make you feel things,” “Skin protects your guts,” and “Brains make you think.” It was even illustrated, which was a joint venture with my brother. It was called “The Bones Book” as that’s what we called the copy of Grey’s Anatomy we had in the house. I’m not sure why we had it, as neither of my parents have ever been in the medical field.

I wrote off and on, never really finishing anything until 2010, when I was 30. In the past 11 years, I’ve written 7 novels and 6 incomplete novels.

The novel I’m working on now is the first novel I finished back in 2010 called “Burrows of Blood and Shadow” formerly “Midnight Comes Softly.” (I’m glad I changed the name. The original title doesn’t really fit the book. It sounds more like a cozy horror about the ghost of a WWI soldier visiting his old home. The novel actually has blood and burrows, even if the burrows are cosmic portals to the minds of others and not literal holes in the ground.)

What prompted you to apply for the Sponsored Artist Award?

I saw the award and thought that this would be a way to finally have some money to get my work polished enough to publish. I didn’t want to put it out there if it wasn’t ready. It wouldn’t be fair to the readers or the work.

What are your goals for this work?

I plan to self publish. I managed to find a really nice pre-made cover that gives off the tone of my book. It even has creepy doorways that are burrow-like.

What is the dream and how will the sponsored artist award assist in bringing you closer to that?

My dream is to have my novel published and available to people. This award allows me to do that and not just look on the outside, dreaming of heading in.
