Indie Ink Judges

We want to give a huge shout out to all the awesome, dedicated individuals who have volunteered to be our judges for the Indie Ink Awards. They have graciously given their time and expertise to help uplift and highlight indie works. 

Many of the judges read and review indie novels on their blogs, YouTube, and social media purely out of their love for books. Please check out our list of judges and give them a follow! 

Laura Bennett

BIO: Laura is an agent at the Liverpool Literary Agency, and specialises in science-fiction and fantasy. She is passionate about diversity in SFF writing. Laura also works as a freelance writer, and she is currently the writer and loremaster for an indie video game, in addition to writing for various roleplaying games. Chelsea

BIO: Chelsea is a book reviewer with a following on many platforms including YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram, who’s aim is to read everything that she enjoys and shout about it. Promoting indie authors and small presses is a high priority when it comes to discovering new favourites. Having had a YouTube channel for a few years now, she has taken part in judging for SPSFC and is constantly on the lookout for new and amazing books.

Lisa Woods

BIO: Lisa is a booktuber from Yorkshire who enjoys sharing her love of all things bookish. After a long break she came back to the community in December 2020 and never looked back. She posts weekly vlogs, book tag videos, hauls and review and weekly live shows and is always on the look out for a new fave. You can find Lisa on YouTube and Instagram.

Alma Raymer

BIO: Alma (she/ella) is an avid reader and book nerd who started talking about books on Twitter in 2020 and StoryGraph for reviews starting in late 2021. Alma enjoys SFF both as an escape, and to reflect on the state of our world. She especially enjoys reading from BIPOC and LGBTQNIA2S+ authors, and loves it when folks ask her for SFF book recommendations. When not reading, Alma is engaged in social justice activism, nerding out about data or ttRPGs, is teaching her dog a new trick, caring for her aquatic and other smaller pets, spending time under the surface of the ocean, or researching the best location for her newest native pollinator plant acquisition.

Ann Clarence

BIO: Anne is the writer and creator of The Reading Life book blog. She made the blog back in 2016 due to the lack of people in her life she feels like she can rant about books too. Anne has a huge passion for all things literature, but at present-day, she is especially fond of anything romance-related (it’s her version of “healthy obsession”). Very open towards authors and writers no matter if they are traditional indie or self-published. Nor does she judge if an author is more experienced or inexperienced. Anne truly believes in supporting writers all around and helping out these authors in their career journeys with her platform, feedback, and experiences.

BIO: Destiny has been blogging for over five years. She wants to share her love for books with the world and give her opinion of those books. Her love of reading came from her family having a home library and having her mother read to her as a child. She read an average of 100 books a year. You can find her on WordPress.

Lauralee Jacks

BIO: Lauralee Jacks graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She recently graduated with a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. She was a first grade elementary teacher, and is currently a DJ and a small talk show host at the local radio station, 105.5 WYTM-FM.

Nikki

BIO: Similar to the apex predator of the Dragon hunting for its next meal, Nikki, The Book Dragon, searches for her next book. And just as Dragon Fire consumes everything in its wake, so too does she devour the words on a page. Noticing that indie authors tend to get sidelined (especially marginalized indie authors), she wanted to do something to help them get in the conversation. So, she began her blog, Thebookdragon.blog. Though she may get a bit distracted during the school year, she commits to reading every indie book thrown her way and reviewing those she enjoys (or sending her notes to the author for those she didn’t enjoy).

Renee

BIO: Renee loves books and reading! Renee reads romance, mysteries, chick lit, detective type stories and suspense. Renee started a blog that would support the authors and not be commercial. There were many times she read something because it was recommended or rated high, and in her opinion was awful. So she writes about books she loves, and if she don’t at least like them, she won’t write about them. No matter your mood, there’s a great book to suit it. Words to live by!! BIO: Portia is a traveler, seeker, foodie, and a bookaholic. Most of the times, you will find her reading a book. A brilliant, mind-twisting mystery keeps her going. After years of putting away my dreams of writing, she is finally taking baby steps towards it. So she has created this website that talks about her book collection and the books she loves to read. Molly Fennig

BIO: Molly Fennig began blogging about books in high school. She especially loves reviewing and supporting books by indie, small-press, and young authors. Molly self-published her first novel, InSomnus, at age 17. She published short stories in The Blue Route Literary Magazine, The Blue Nib, the Running Wild Press Anthology, Havik 2020 Anthology, and other literary presses while getting her minor in English. Her second novel, Starvation, was published by Immortal Works in November 2020. The book explores themes such as male eating disorders and mental health, and won 2021 Independent Press, 2021 Reader’s Favorite, and 2021 Wishing Shelf Book Awards.

Joe Rixman

BIO: John is a published author of short fiction and game work (Foreshadows: The Ghosts of Zero, Vampire: the Requiem, Star Trek Adventures, and EVE Online) and has been reading for over 50 years. He’s loves being immersed in a good story, with characters that come alive on the page. Joe is also a screenwriter and greatly appreciates authors who can visually place him into their worlds. BIO: For the past year, Sheila has worked as a bookseller at an independent bookstore—a dream of hers since she was a child. She has always been an avid reader, and loves finding new books through Bookstagram and Booktube. She is a big romance reader, but has recently read a lot of nonfiction and poetry, alongside her new favorite: monster romance. BIO: Zooloo’s Book Diary was set up to provide a place to share all of Zoé’s reviews in a very excitable and personal, and in her head, funny way. BIO: Tiffany is the author of seven fiction books, two non-fiction books, and earned publication in more than a dozen anthologies and magazines. As a publisher with Rebellion LIT, Tiffany works tirelessly to support authors looking to bring their art to the world. She also releases a weekly podcast, Beta Reader Bits.  She works voluntarily as a Board Member with WriteHive, a non-profit organization which provides free, inclusive events and resources. BIO: L.A. Young is an avid reader who has studied literature, education and librarianship, so she knows a thing or two about literature. BIO: Laura AKA The Bookish Hermit, works from home and has plenty of time for reading, which is one of her greatest passions and pleasures in life! BIO: Werepug is an artist and writer whose short stories were featured in local prints. After finishing their masters degree in biotechnology they return to the university life, this time for art school. They prefer to read fantasy, science fiction, classic and contemporary works about life, as well as short stories and poetry. They live in the south of Germany, with their partner, dog and three canaries.

Maya Grimley

BIO: Maya Grimley is a blogger and podcaster whose love for reading really took off in the 5th grade when she realized she much preferred hanging out in the school library than going outside for recess. When the pandemic hit, Maya decided to share her love of reading with the world by starting her blog, Maya’s Reviews. BIO: Pamela has been a reader her whole life. She started her website, The Picky Bookworm, as a way to showcase her reading life, and through that learned about indie books and what fun they are. She’s become a huge supporter of the indie book community, and offers tons of services to help them along their publishing path. She has a podcast that showcases a new indie author every Saturday, as well as book reviews, blog posts, a discussion forum and editing services. She loves crafts and learned to make book inspired candles in her shop. This multi-passionate entrepreneur loves to help people, which is the core of her business mission. BIO: If born in a fantasy world, Arina would have been a roguelike technomancer and the coolest mage-assassin. As it is, her love of tech led her to dev, and her passion for the art of storytelling to book reviewing. BIO: Jim is a father who has loved reading his entire life, and passed it along to his son. Together they produce Fantasy for the Ages, where they discuss and share this fiction love. Jim has read from all types of genres, and has enjoyed both fiction and non-fiction, but he has a definite preference for fantasy and science fiction. BIO: Rebecca (Aka Bex) is an avid SFF reader and blogger. She currently is a mod on The Oasis SFF discord and has taken pleasure in creating the graphics for The Oasis Badge Bingo and Ready Player Read challenges. Rebecca is in the process of writing her debut fantasy novel and has recently completed a poetry challenge which has won her an Emily Dickinson award for 21 poems in 21 days. BIO: Crystina Luna is the owner of Geek Declassified, a pop culture website established in 2021. Originally reviewing books and movies on her personal website, Luna decided to create a space to not only share her geekiness with the world, but where others can do the same. BIO: A massive horror reader. A quiet and shy person but deep down she is wondering how many of you are a potential serial killer. An aspiring teacher and mother of Chaos. Mother to 3 crazy boys. BIO: Anna-Kate Miedler is a full time college student who runs a podcast called Penned In, highlighting unknown authors and reviewing books. She’s always up to reading outside of her comfort zone, but her preferred genres are fantasy and horror. You can frequently find her on her Tik Tok page reviewing her favorite reads (which include The Poppy War by RF Kuang and Survive the Night by Danielle Vega) and vlogging her experiences trying to become a published author. BIO: Lissa is a former librarian, now turned book reviewer. They focus on scifi and fantasy with LGBT+ and disability rep. After years of library work, she opted to leave the field. In 2021 she began posting about her reads on tiktok and fueled her passion for books that way, expanding into other platforms. BIO: Emma is a Clinical Psychology PhD student and writer with a passion for reading and reviewing science fiction and fantasy. She’s been a blogger and reviewer for three years, and has had her writing published in several national literary magazines.

BIO: Aaron started his blog just over a year ago. He had been reading Fantasy and sci-fi and wanted to chat and share thoughts with like-minded people. BIO: Daniel is a microbiologist and an Associate Professor of Biology at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, where he also teaches courses like Biology in Fiction and Film, and Apocalyptic Culture, in the All-College Honors program. Daniel writes book reviews and critiques for a variety of outlets including Fantasy Book Critic, Skiffy & Fanty, Strange Horizons, Speculative Fiction in Translation, World Literature Today, and his own review site Reading1000Lives.

Chad Barnard

BIO: Chad recently found his love in reading for enjoyment again in late 2020 then proceeded to find the online book communities shortly thereafter. In 2021 he began rating, reviewing and discussing the books he read in Discord and Goodreads. In 2022 he decided to continue to grow in his reviewing process as well as cast a wider net with Instagram, Twitter and his own Blog to find more like minded and authors to discuss books with.

Ashley Brennan

BIO: Ashley has been a big fan of self-pub/indie books. Joining FanFiAddict introduced her to SPFBO, which led to discovering an indie community that has blown her away in creativity and storytelling. Ashley loves a multitude of fantasy and sci-fi subgenres. She loves character driven stories and tends to treasure prose that connects with her on a deeper level.
