K. J. Harrowick is a fantasy and science fiction author with a strong passion for twisted stories blending grimdark worlds and futurist technology. She the co-founder of the I Know Why She Stayed Initiative and Authors Against Abuse, co-founder of Writer In Motion, and a repeat panelist for the WriteHive Annual Convention and the Weeknight Writers Convention. She’s also been a contestant on the gameshow Wordcrash!
She’s cast a grimdark lens on what happens when a colony ship turns against its own passengers with her series The Hidden Flames Artifact, and she’s currently capturing reader’s hearts with her co-authored memoir I Know Why She Stayed. With an unhealthy obsession for dragons, tacos, cheese, and beer, K. J. also works as a freelance web developer and graphic designer on a broad range of client projects. Her newest novel, The Mountain and the Moon, is set to release 2026.
I help authors dig to the deepest roots of their story and rebuild from the foundations right up to the small, gritty details.
I’m looking for a mentee that’s ready to learn and isn’t afraid of hard work, because we’re gonna tackle the big issues and flesh them out into a solid structure and pace.
No matter where you plan to query or release your story, the goal is to get you ready for an agent, a publisher, or self-publication and get you connected to readers. Every step of the way I’ll be there to encourage you, help bounce ideas, or just be a sounding board if you need to scream into the universe. If you think I might be a good fit for your story, you can @me your submission and I’ll be sure to flag it for review.
Beyond your story, my mentee can also expect a long-term relationship, lots of insider industry info, marketing strategies, and information on all the bits that go beyond the book to put your story into readers’ hands.
I’m desperate for science fiction, science fiction horror, and deep sea science fiction. If you’ve got Sphere x Firefly, anything Event Horizon x Pandorum, or if you write in the vein of Ivan Cat, I want to be your best friend.
I want all the dark, weird and twisted worlds, villains, and creatures, all mixed up with vengeful romance. If you have SCIENCE FICTION HORROR on DERELICT STARSHIPS, just @me in your submission. I need all the creepy, weird, villainous vibes trapped inside cold steel.
I’m also a huge junkie for genre mashups, so if you have a fantasy world long forgotten inside a starship, I want it.
Give me anything:
- ADULT/NEW ADULT
- Science Fiction (I prefer portal/isekai or second world)
- Cyberpunk (and make it dark!)
- Noir – any SFF written in a noir voice (think Bunraku or Sin City)
- Science Fantasy – I’m picky about my fantasy these days, so I want Lovecraftian dark worlds and plotlines with integrated tech, or something so far under the ocean it’s got all the creepfest vibes.
- Horror (in space or on another world)
- Cosmic Horror
- Anything Lovecraftian
- SFF Romance (in space or on another world)
- Speculative (give me all your bizarre imaginings and offbeat worlds)
- Diverse casts (LGBTQA+, BIPOC, Disabled, OwnVoices) – I would especially love a heroine battling seizures during her adventure
- Serial Fiction & Anthologies (in the ^above genres – must have an ending)
- Non-Fiction (this year I’m looking for happy or weird nonfiction)
Here are some of my favorite stories: Myst trilogy, Beyond Redemption, Event Horizon, the Donovan series, The Eyes of Light and Darkness, Beneath the Shadow Dark, Lings, Paradise 1, The Everlight Protocol, Pandorum.
I also sensitivity read for:
- Livestock Handling
- Migraines
- PTSD/Trauma Responses
- Seizures
- Technology/Hackers/Code-Bases
Erotic sex scenes are absolutely okay. I’m fine with all forms of trauma as long as it serves the story. The exception here is nothing aimed at children or child death–it’s a hard no for me.
If you’re not sure, ask me on #HiveMentor!
