Building up Authors

Sponsored Writer Award

WriteHive's Annual Writing Grant

Every year, we reserve a portion of our donations to assist writers in publishing their work. A successful book involves editors, cover artists, formatting and marketing, which all cost money. It is our hope that we can assist at least one author every year with up to $500 in publishing-related costs for free. As a grant, this is not money that needs to be repaid ever. We just pay for the things you need on your behalf, and you have the benefit of the extra funds to do things you may not normally have had the opportunity to do.

What can the funds be used for? Well, pretty much anything really! But here are some examples:

  • editing costs
  • cover art or illustrations (does your book need a map, per chance?)
  • proofreading and formatting services
  • hiring of book tours or review services such as Netgalley or Foreword Reviews
  • writing aids such as ProWriting Aid, Scrivener, or an alternative to an MS Word subscription
  • querying tools such as Query Tracker or Publishers Weekly
  • fees for writing contests or writing retreats
  • physical supplies such as help with a laptop, hard drive, internet hotspot
  • books! Do you need notebooks, a new version of Save the Cat!, the Chicago Manual of Style, or Bird by Bird?

All winners also have the opportunity to meet with relevant staff and board members with experience in their desired publishing path to ask questions, gain advice, or get feedback ideas and concerns.

2025 Award Winner

Who is Eligible?

Since we ask to distribute the funds within 2 years of winning, we ask that you have a fully written manuscript, before applying for the Sponsored Writer Award. The manuscript can be in any stage of development (first drafts okay!).

You do *not* need to have committed to a “path,” ie: self-publishing or traditional (small or large) press. If you are selected as a winner, you will have the opportunity to meet with members of our team and discuss potential next steps for your manuscript.

How It Works

The 2026 Submission Period will start in May 11, 2026 and is open until June 14, 2026.

The application process consists of a few questions on your writing process and goals. You will be asked to include either a query letter or a back cover blurb about your book These things will help us get to know you and your work.

We recommend having your query/blurb ready before starting the application. Here are resources for a query letter and book blurbs if you would like more information.

When the submission window closes, our Board of Directors will begin reviewing the applications. The applications will be anonymous to prevent any bias.

Five finalists will be chosen on or before July 1, 2026. Please watch your emails and white list admin@writehive.org so our email does not go to your spam box!

If you are notified to be one of the 5 Finalists, you must respond within 48 hours with the first 10 pages of your manuscript.

Winners of the Sponsored Writer Award will be announced at the WriteHive Annual Conference, held July 10 – 12, 2026. While you do not need to be present to win, we would love if you could join us!
