WriteHive Mentorship Program

#HiveMentor

Hayley Reese Chow

Hayley started her publishing journey in March 2020 with her award-winning, self-published epic YA Fantasy, Odriel’s Heirs. After finishing that five-book series, her second series, a YA sci-fi romance, launched in April 2022 from Whimsical Publishing, a small traditional press. Then in Dec 2022, she scored a slot as a WriteHive Mentee with the amazing E.J. Dawson as her mentor on a YA paranormal horror manuscript, and in July 2023, after querying a YA romcom, Hayley signed with a literary agent.

On the verge of finishing her (*counts on fingers*) 17th manuscript, Hayley has worked extensively as a critique partner and beta reader over the last five years. She’s super excited to come full circle as a mentor and pay her experience forward to the writing community she’s learned so much from.

When not writing, Hayley dodges hurricanes in Florida with her two wild boys, a rescue mutt who thinks she’s a cat, and her long-suffering husband.

I’d love to work with a mentee who’s passionate about their story and needs a little help through the revision stage. Someone who will be open to feedback and willing to brainstorm on problem points to find solutions that can really make their story shine.

As a mentor, I’ll be going over the story twice. Once for big-picture plot notes and revisions, and once for smaller, line-level feedback. Then I’m also willing to go over the query letter, synopsis, and pitch to help you get query ready. Each time, I’d like to go over the feedback via Discord/Zoom/Phone (or in DMs if that’s what you’re comfortable with), so we can discuss sticking points, solutions, and any other questions or concerns you may have about any step in the writing/publishing process.

Ultimately, I want my mentee to come out of this program feeling like they’ve taken their manuscript to the next level and are ready for the next step in their publishing journey.

So, Young Adult is my jam. However, I could probably go for an Upper-Middle Grade or a manuscript flirting on the New Adult side. In general, I like fast-paced stories with a commercial flavor and at least a hint of romance. I want characters I can fall in love with, settings I can get lost in, and plots that surprise me.

Genre-wise I’m pretty flexible, but here are some general preferences:

  • For Fantasy, I like it on the darker side. (Sabriel, Defy the Night, Six of Crows, The Scorpio Races)
  • For Sci-fi, I like it fun & fast-paced. (Cinder, Illuminae, The Innkeeper Chronicles, Red Rising)
  • For Romance, I like it sweet, swoony, & funny (Today Tonight Tomorrow, Fangirl, Life’s Too Short)
  • I’m also game for Horror, Thriller, & Mystery, and the more twists, the better. And if you can scare me, I’m totally in. (One of Us is Lying, The September House, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder)

What I’m not a good fit for:

  • Nonfiction
  • Literary Fiction
  • Sad Endings
  • Explicit Spice (open-door is fine, but I’m looking for a 3/5 on Rachel Rowland’s spice scale or lower)
  • Superheroes (unless you’re going dark a la The Watchmen or The Boys)
  • Mermaids (unless you’re taking them dark… in which case, I could be convinced.)
  • Damsels in distress
  • Books with a slower pace
  • Sprawling epics (120K+ words)
  • SA

Basically what I’m saying is, if you can comp to K-drama, you’ve probably got me.
