At WriteHive, our mission is for people of all backgrounds to feel welcome and to help them achieve. Black History Month is about acknowledging how black Americans contributed to the arts, politics, science, and society.
Last summer, the responses to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others before them were a sign that we still have work to do in the sense of political and racial divides. We must do every bit we can to help create a society committed to being inclusive of all.
We begin our month-long celebration at WriteHive by acknowledging the works of Black American author NK Jemisin. This month’s read along will feature her urban fantasy book, The City We Became.
This was such a fitting book to focus on with its rich portrayal of the cultural, racial, and gender diversity that WriteHive strives to promote. I started listening to it on audiobook recently and I was hooked after barely a chapter in. The political and social commentary are reflective of the times. Jemisin’s vibrant, passionate descriptions of the character’s fast-paced city life made me feel nostalgic. She breaks down each character into individuals making their own way in the city. The narration describes the city in such an imaginative way that it’s breathing life into the characters. Hints of paranormal beings lurking around every street corner. I’m almost halfway through it now and I highly recommend it.
Please join WriteHive at February’s #BookNook on our Discord server for a read along and discussion on this page-turning adventure.
